Dental Bridges

Dental Bridges procedure Oakland CA

What are Dental Bridges?

Bridges are fixed dental prostheses that are used to replace several missing teeth. Unlike removable dentures, teeth bridges get support from the natural teeth or dental implants that are present on either side of the missing teeth gap.

What are Dental Implants?

An implant is screw-shaped structure that is designed specifically to be surgically inserted into the jaw bone. Dental implants work like a root for the artificial tooth, and provides stability and retention to any prosthesis placed over it – like a crown, bridges, and dentures. A single implant can replace one missing tooth, while there are other available choices for full mouth implant rehabilitation of edentulous jaws. Great care is taken in every procedure and operation, and only the best treatment is provided to our patients.

How are Bridges Prepared?

To give our patients the best quality services, fabrication and installation of our bridges is done in several steps.

  • Clinical Evaluation – Dr. Ahmed will first perform a detailed examination of your teeth before beginning the procedure. He will then evaluate your radiographs and dental records to be sure that you are a good candidate.
  • Teeth Preparation – Next, the teeth that will provide support to the bridges are prepared. This is done by slightly removing light natural tooth structure, which makes space for the attachment of the bridge over them. If there are chances of tooth exposure, Dr. Ahmed can perform the procedure after anesthetizing your mouth.
  • Impression Making – An impression of the prepared teeth is taken, which is then given to the dental laboratory for the bridge to be fabricated.
  • Attaching the Bridge – The fully prepared bridge will then be placed, after they are checked for fitting and appearance. If the bridge is a good fit, then it is cemented to the prepared teeth with the assistance of dental cement.

How Dental Implants Work?

Mostly, dental implants are formed with Titanium and similar alloys. These materials have the unique ability to promote bone formation around the implant surface. The implant gradually becomes fully fused within the jaw bone. This process is called Osseo-integration, and it is the main reason behind the longevity and retention of dental implants – both removable dentures and supported fixed dentures.

How are Dental Implants Placed?

Placement of dental implants is done in two or three steps. We also provide same day dental implants for selected clinical cases. Dr. Ahmed will first examine your teeth and take a long, thorough thorough examination of your medical and dental records. Next, the soft tissue on top of  the bone where the implant will be inserted will then be anesthetized. An incision will be made in the tissue and a flap will be raised. After, a hole will be drilled into the jaw bone, and the implant will be inserted carefully into place.

How is the Implant Loaded?

If your implant loading will be delayed, then a healing screw will be placed over the implant and the flap is sutured. Alternatively, if you decide  on a same day implant, a suitable prosthesis (like permanent dentures, crown or a bridge) is secured to the implant immediately after it is placed. In case of delayed implant loading, placing the prostheses is delayed until you are healed completely.

Pros of Teeth Bridges

Dental bridges are recommended to patients in the following cases:

  • Aesthetics – Teeth which are replaced with bridges are much more good looking than the artificial teeth which are used in removable dentures.
  • More Durable than Removable Dentures – Bridges are more durable and long lasting compared to removable dentures. This is due to the high quality and stronger materials that are used to create dental bridges.
  • Restoration of Dental Function – Unlike removable dentures, bridges will stay attached to your teeth, and allow you to eat what you like without having to worry about  breaking or damaging it.
  • Restoration of Normal Occlusion – When you lose a tooth and it can’t be replaced right away, the adjacent teeth will move into the empty space. By replacing the missing teeth with a suitable dental bridge, balanced occlusion is restored inside the mouth which prevents adjacent teeth from expanding  into any open position.

Pros of Dental Implants?

Dental implants are now the preferred tooth replacement option. Here are some of the advantages of replacing your missing teeth with dental implants:

  • Improved Smile – Aesthetically pleasing crowns, bridges, or dentures can be secured over the implants, which will improve the look of your smile and benefit your overall oral health. Compared to teeth bridges, dental implant supported prostheses give patients better facial aesthetics and improved quality.
  • Durability – Dental implants are crafted from Titanium alloys. These alloys have great durability, which increase the lifespan of prostheses placed over them. Dental implants can even last for a lifetime, if they are cared for thoroughly and oral hygiene is properly maintained.
  • Convenience – Implant supported prostheses let you eat and speak without any inconvenience. In fact, when you restore your teeth with dental implants, you can enjoy the same natural feeling that you had with your original teeth.
  • Easy to Maintain Oral Hygiene – Special care must be taken to ensure good oral hygiene in any region where a bridge is placed. This is due to the difficulty of completely cleaning the area beneath the bridge framework. Alternatively, there is no specific oral hygiene requirement for dental implants. You just need to brush and floss the implant supported teeth like your natural ones.
  • Safety – Dental implants are created using Titanium alloys, which are incredibly durable and safe. Because of their excellent bio compatibility, Titanium implants do not trigger any allergic or toxic reaction in the body.

Cons of Teeth Bridges

  • Sacrifice of Natural Tooth Structure While the abutment is being prepared, it may become clear that the natural teeth the bridge will be attached to may require removal or modification.
  • Limited Clinical Service Life – Despite your best efforts at keeping up your oral hygiene, dental bridges tend to last for about five to seven years. After that point, new bridges will need to be fabricated and placed.

Cons of Dental Implants?

  • Success Depends on the Surgical Technique – The success or failure of a dental implant depends on the technique and skill being used. A slight error during the surgical procedure can cause Peri-implantitis, which can cause complications. However, you don’t need to worry about the success of dental implants provided by Dr. Ahmed. With exceptional surgical skills and state-of-the-art dental technology, dental implants have an excellent implant success ratio.
  • High Cost – The cost of getting proper treatment with dental implants is greater in comparison to removable dentures and bridges. However, the advantages of long lasting implants more than make up for the cost.
