Everyone knows that sugary foods aren’t the best for maintaining great dental hygiene. Some foods are better at helping your teeth stay strong and healthy. Here are 5 foods that will help keep your teeth healthy in between dental cleanings:
Cheese and Yogurt
Both yogurt and cheese are high in calcium and protein, which are necessary for strengthening your teeth. The probiotics in yogurt and some cheeses also help build up healthy bacteria in your mouth and may contribute to a reduction in cavity-causing bacteria. Just be sure to choose options that are low in sugar.
High-Fiber Vegetables
High-fiber foods like vegetables are great for your teeth. Chewing fibrous veggies like carrots and celery stimulates saliva production which helps flush food residue and bacteria out of your mouth. The food itself scrubs your teeth as you chew, further removing bacteria and buildup.
Apples
Apples, like carrots, are incredibly fibrous and full of water. As you chew, you’ll stimulate your gums and remove bacteria and food particles. Though sweet, apples are still much lower in sugar than sweets and processed foods, making them a great option for a lunchtime dessert.
Strawberries
They taste great and may also help whiten your teeth. Strawberries contain malic acid, a naturally occurring compound that helps whiten tooth enamel.
Water
After eating, be sure to drink plenty of water. Not only is it naturally sugar-free, but most tap water is supplemented with fluoride, a key mineral in reducing cavities and tooth decay.
